Groove Doctors Dance Party Band Blog:
Diverse Song List a Big Hit

When people come hear my band the GROOVE Doctors,  a dance party band located in the  San Francisco Bay Area, I get told all the time how much they enjoy listening to us and dancing the night away. I am please that people enjoy our music and the entertainment we provide, but  I want to know “why” people enjoy us so that I can make sure we keep on doing the things that make us well liked by our audience.  I think this desire to please was “inside of me” before I chose my career in sales, which I have been in since 1980 when I graduated from the University of California at Davis (UCD) with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry.

I probably get three main answers to why people like the GROOVE Doctors: 1) “You are fun” 2) “Your female vocalists are incredible” and 3) “I love your mix of songs.” In another blog I will address what we do to create a “fun” atmosphere when we play and how fantastic it is to have talented musicians in the band, but today I wanted to address the last comment about people loving our mix of songs.

A lot of bands that are large like the GROOVE Doctors (i.e. multiple lead singers, a horn section plus bass-drums-keys-guitar) only play R&B music such as Motown, Soul, Disco and Funk. The Dr’s on the other hand also play Rock n ‘Roll and Modern Hits, and at certain private parties we do Ballads, Swing, Latin, Standards, Jazz, Special Occasion and Wedding songs. I think it is a shame so many larger bands only play R&B music, there are always some people in the crowd that really love rock ‘n roll, and the same goes for the modern songs currently being played on the radio.

Here’s an example from a set we played earlier this month at the Main Street Brewery in Pleasanton, CA.

  1. Signed, Sealed, Delivered by Stevie Wonder (Motown)
  2. Crazy in Love by Beyonce (Modern)
  3. Beginnings by Chicago (Easy Rock)

  11. China Grove by the Doobie Brothers (Classic Rock)
  12. Living on a Prayer by Bon Jovi (Classic Rock)
  13. Domino by Jesse J (Modern)
  14. Fooled Around Fell in Love by Elvin Bishop (Ballad)
  15. Sing a Song by Earth, Wind & Fire (R&B)
